The Ladder Translated by Shahla Naghiyeva and Alison Mandaville
By Nariman Həsənzadə
This world is a ladder — so kind on the way up but so cruel on the descent. We met on the rungs, each halfway. She was on her way up, and I, I was going down, heedless. The steps, for her, still led up to her dreams, but for me, they led only below, into my memories. In the same moment, one was rising to the break of day and the other climbing down towards sunset. I could no more find the strength to rise again than she had the power to descend. Just or unjust, it was the nature of things. I wish we had never met. Or that she had come earlier, And I later, into this world.
